Comment By Cherie, 16.5.10 This is the first time I’ve done this, I’ve been wanting to do it for a while, so I chose one of my controllers that was a bit shoddy (The joystick rubber is worn off in some places, the D-pad is wonky and there are problems with the battery pack so I used my plug and play pack to see if it still works – it did ). All up in went pretty well, the L symbol on the left side has a lot of bleeding of the black paint, but it still looks really good. I think I’ll definitely do it again so, any ideas? Let me know. Part 1 of 3. Thumbstick or trigger on your XBOX 360 controller broken? Or just plain worn out from hours upon hours of gameplay? Here’s a video tutorial on a soldering method you can use to replace the parts in about 25 minutes. Be sure to hit up the DIY section of the Viking360 forums to discuss mods with other thrifty do-it-yourselfers. www.Viking360.com At a minimum you will need *1.) A soldering iron and some solder. *2.) Desoldering sucker OR desoldering braid from radio shack (either will do the trick) *3.) The replacement trigger or thumbstick mechanism, and of course *4.) The special screwdriver to open up the controller. By the time you purchase all of this equipment I’m sure you’ll find that it would be cheaper just to purchase a new controller. But, if you happen to have some of this equipment on hand (including a ‘donor’ circuit board to get the replacement parts from) then you can save some money by replacing the part yourself. Of course we assume you already know how to open and disassemble your XBOX 360 controller using a Torx-8 ‘tamper resistant / security’ screwdriver. This video is just demonstrating the soldering, for those of you who haven’t done a lot of soldering before. We use a lot more tools than what we listed above, because we do a lot of mod work.
